(dn) The Serendib Leisure Management sponsored, 17th Travel Trade Sports Club Open Men's, Women's & Men's Veterans (O-40) Badminton Championships 2012 will take place this Sunday, September 9 at St. Thomas' College, Mt. Lavinia Indoor Sports Complex, commencing 8.30 am.
There will be 14 teams in the Men's open, 08 teams in Women's & 06 teams in the Men's Over -40, a total of 28 teams from 15 member firms. Srilankan Airlines , the defending Champions of the Men's Open & the Men's Over - 40 & Runners up in the women's will be the favorites in all three tournaments.
The rest of the teams are Mermaid Hotel & Club, Kalutara (2011 mens open runners up ), Cinnamon Lake side (defending Women's Champion), Ceylon Continental Hotel, Bentota Beach Hotel, Lanka Princes Hotel, Aluthgama , Classic Travels , Cinnamon Grand , Jetwing "Blue" Negombo, Royal Palms Beach Hotel Kalutara, Heritance Ahungalle, Diethelm Travels , Walkers Tours & Whittalls Travels (combined) , Tangerine Beach Hotel , Kalutara and the sponsors , Serendib Leisure Management.
(dm) Niluka Karunaratne who competed at the recently concluded Olympics in London has moved two slots up in the world rankings to 48th position according to the governing body for the sport.
He was promoted to this position after he thrashed the Japanese shuttler who was ranked eighth in the world during the preliminary round match at the London Olympics.
(london2012) Sri Lanka first competed as Ceylon at the London 1948 Olympic Games where Duncan WHITE claimed their first Olympic medal. He took silver in the 400m Hurdles.
The name Sri Lanka was first used at the Munich 1972 Olympic Games.
Swimmer Dipika CHANMUGAM was their first female representative when she took part at the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games.
In 2000, Susanthika JAYASINGHE won Sri Lanka's only other medal to date. She crossed the line third in the women's 200m in Sydney but was later awarded the silver medal when race winner Marion JONES (USA) was disqualified for doping offences.
JAYASINGHE carried the Sri Lankan flag at the Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 Olympic Games where she competed in the 200m.
Sri Lanka's team in Beijing numbered eight in six sports.

(adaderana) Sri Lanka Badminton player Thilini Jayasinghe has qualified for the 2012 London Olympics, President of the Sri Lanka Badminton Association Parakrama Basnayake said.
Jayasinghe made history at the 2008 Beijing Olympics by becoming the first Sri Lankan women’s badminton player ever to represent Sri Lanka at the Olympics.
She won her first title at the age of 13 in a Kandy under-13 tournament and soon became the national champion in the same age group. She continued her success, winning national age group titles until she was 19. In 2004, she became the first player from the Kandy district and Central Province to become the All Sri Lanka national women’s singles champion.
(dn) The second Mercantile Badminton Association (MBA) Inter-Firm Team Doubles Badminton Championship will worked off from June 13 to 17 at the S Thomas's College Sports Complex in Mount Lavinia. This was revealed during a press conference held at the Galle Face hotel recently.
As a part of MBA's 30th anniversary celebrations the tournament will be conducted on a grand scale with the principal sponsorship of ‘Glitz’, one of the giants in country's fashion industry who has stepped into support sports in a big way for the first time.
Over 400 shuttlers including most of the top ranking national level players are expected to take part in the tournament. A tie will comprise five matches (two men's doubles, a mixed double, a women's double and a men's Veteran's doubles). A team can include maximum 14 players consisted of nine men and five women shuttlers. The matches will start at 4.30 pm on all working days and 9.00 am on Saturdays while the play time commence at 10.00 am on Sunday. The semi finals are scheduled on Saturday while the finals and third place play offs will be played on Sunday. An accredited international referee Chandana Nilantha will be the chief referee of the tournament.
(dn) A basic training programme in badminton organized by Mercantile Services Badminton Association will be held for all MBA registered technical officials on May 26 at Royal College Union Skills Centre.
All participants will be trained in new sport techniques and methodology and will be able to work as Umpires and Match Referees at the Mercantile Services Badminton Association and subsequently local and world level tournaments after successfully complete the training programme.
Veteran Coach and World Badminton Association Match Referee Ajith Wijesinghe and Asian Badminton Association Match Referee Chandana Nilantha will be the facilitators.
(dn) Sri Lankan star shuttler Niluka Karunarathne will be in action at the forthcoming London Olympics, Sri Lanka Badminton Association (SLBA) President Parakrama Basnayake confirmed yesterday. Niluka, 47th in world rankings, sits in the 30th position in the Olympic qualifying rankings.
Badminton World Federation (BWF) has informed SLBA about Karunarathne’s position.
Basnayake to the Daily News, that woman shuttler Thilini Jayasinghe who represented Sri Lanka at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, also has a chance to make it a double. “According to BWF, Jayasinghe has an opportunity to play as the third reserve player in the women’s singles at the London Olympics” Basnayake said. Jayasinghe is 109th in world rankings.
In Olympic qualifications, she is at the 46th position.
(dn) The All Island Age Group Badminton Championship 2012 organized by Moratuwa University will be held from February 24 to March 7 at Moratuwa University grounds, Katubedda, Moratuwa.
The age groups of the competition is under 11, 13, 15, 17, 19. These competitions are meant for schools.
The second category of the tournament is been named as 'Badminton International Shuttlers Fest 2012'. It is meant for State and international universities. Up to date there are more than 1,000 applications are been already received for the All Island Age Group Badminton Championship 2012.
(so) One of Canada's leading badminton coaching schools Fernando's Youth Badminton Academy has been lusted in the 'World Badminton website, "This is a tremendous boost for the academy." Said Dharshana Fernando - the founder and head coach. Fernando keen in promoting badminton in Sri Lanka. Picture by Kapila Somaratne – Panadura Group Corr. Dharshana counts 43 years experience as a player and a coach. The listing of the academy's website is another feather in the cap for the academy.
The top 20 badminton coaching sites are listed. About 150 students are in the academy and coaching is going at a pace.
Dharshana Fernando was a former junior national champion in Sri Lanka and a national player for a number of years. The head coach Piumika Fernando said that they have produced many shuttle champions. Dharshana has held many coaching programs in many countries like Denmark, Belgium, Czech Republic and the USA. He says there are more applications but due to pressure of work, he is unable to check all the applications.
(dn) Chandrika de Silva clinched the Gold medal and the Women’s Senior Champion title in the 5th World Senior Badminton Championships at the Richmond Olympic Oval, Canada recently.
The biennial event was represented by 42 countries this year which consist of singles, doubles events for 35-65 years age category men and women along with the mixed double event.
Chandrika defeated world number one Canadian Chamani Reed in the singles final 2-0, (21/16, 21/16). She beat world number two Panila Stong (Denmark) in the quarter final match, 2-0 while beating Canadian Suneetha Karr, 3-2 in the semi final. Chandrika is an old girl of Swarnapali Balika Vidyalaya, Anuradhapura and has won the Sri Lanka Open women’s Championship on 11 occasions. She has won several medals in international events including the mixed double gold medal in the Syrian tournament.
(dn) Sri Lankan shuttlers gave another fine display in the Sudirman Cup by beating Iceland by 3-2 in China yesterday. Sri Lankan won the mixed doubles, men’s singles and men’s doubles but lost the women’s singles and doubles.
Lanka are now on top of level four, group four table with three points while Philippines and Iceland are in second and third place with two and one points respectively.
(dn) The inaugural University of Moratuwa International Shuttlers' Fest (UMISF) 2011 will be held at the University of Moratuwa new gymnasium from May 11 to 13. A school event for junior national age categories will also take place from May 4-10 at the same venue.
Shuttlers from Universities of Sri Jayewardenepura, Colombo, Kelaniya, Ruhuna, Peradeniya and the private universities SLIIT and SAITM will have the opportunity to compete against players from foreign teams.
Teams from India and Malyasia have already confirmed their participation. There will be an open single event for university shuttlers whereas team championships will be on semi league system, comprising of three singles events and two doubles events for both men and women.
(dn) Asian Badminton Confederation (ABC) granted five scholarships to Sri Lanka national level shuttlers recently. The scholarships were awarded in line with the Asian Development Training program 2011.
Accordingly a sum of Rs 17,25,000 has been (Rs 345,000 each ) allocated by ABC for five badminton players to participate in international training programs and tournaments.
The scholarships are of great importance for Sri Lankan shuttlers to prepare and get international training for 2018 Commonwealth Games which is to be held in Sri Lanka.
(dn) The Ariyadasa Silva Open Badminton Championship gets underway after a lapse of two years at Dharmasoka College, Badminton Sports Complex and New Town Hall Badminton Stadium, Ambalangoda from March 24 to 27.
This was revealed at a press briefing held at Sri Lanka Badminton Association Headquarters, Colombo yesterday presided over by SLBA President Roshan Gunawardena. This year the tournament is sponsored by Cupid Exports (Pvt) Ltd who have come forward to develop badminton in the island.
The tournament is organized by Sri Lanka Badminton Association in collaboration with Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda and Southern Province Badminton Association. Open events, senior events and junior events are the three major event categories this year. Junior under 15 boys and girls matches will be held on March 24 while under 17 boys/girls and open matches are scheduled for March 25. The semi-finals of open events and finals of all events will be played on March 27 followed by the awards ceremony.
(dn) Achini Ratnasiri and Upali Samanthika had a fine outing when they won a gold medal in Women's Doubles of the Iran Fajal International Badminton Championship.
The tourney organized by Iran Badminton Federation was held in Teheran in Iran where teams from 31 countries participated.
Sri Lanka Badminton Association (SLBA) President Roshan Gunawardena and Vice President Parakkrama Basnayake welcomed them at the Bandaranaike International Air Port. SLBA President presented both of them cash awards on behalf of the Sri Lanka Badminton.
(dn) A six-member Sri Lankan team will participate in the Iran Fajal International Badminton Tournament which is to be held from February 16 to 19 in Tehran, Iran.
Shuttlers Niluka Karunaratne, Chandrika de Silva, Achini Rathnasiri, Thilini Jayasinghe, Nadeesha Gayanthi and Upuli Samanthika will represent Sri Lanka and will compete in singles and doubles events. The other participating countries are Canada, France, Iran, Turkey, Pakistan, Mauritius, Algeria, Greece, Malaysia, Singapore, Siriya, Philippine, Russia, Kazhakstan, Asarbijan, Armania, Norway.
(SO) The Dharshana Fernando Badminton Academy in Canada is done a real good job. The founder and head coach of the academy is delighted with the progress of the coaching from the beginning and it has turned out to do some coaching conforming to high standards.
Coach Fernando who is now in Canada was a former national player in Sri Lanka and is now a recognised coach in Canada. Recently he was selected as the coach for the Toronto team for the Ontario Winter Games in March. He has followed coaching programmes for coaches in Malaysia and China and in July this year he was invited by a leading badminton school in Denmark to coach at an international coaching program.
The Fernando academy has around 100 students, he decided to assist talented youth in Sri Lanka by way of offering sponsorship package and even getting them international training in badminton.
He hopes to have a branch academy of his badminton school in the near future in Sri Lanka. He has picked on Nakan. International School in Horana Road, Bandaragama and another coaching school in Moratuwa to begin his program.
(DN) Sri Lankan shuttlers won three medals at the Syria International badminton Tournament which was held in Damascus, Syria from August 04 to 07.
Chandrika de Silva and Lasitha Menaka won the gold medal in the mixed doubles event defeating the Turkish duo in the final. Thilini Jayasinghe won the only singles medal for Sri Lanka claiming the bronze medal. She lost to the Champion shuttler who represented Turkey. In the men's doubles, Lankans Lasitha Menaka teamed up with Kasun Madushan to win the bronze medal, being lost to the duo from Bahrain.
(DN) Badminton star Dilshan Umayanga Kariyawasam has been selected to represent Sri Lanka in the Youth Olympic Games to be held from August 14 at the National Stadium, Singapore.
He has been ranked fourth in Asia, based on his performance at the Asian Junior Badminton Championships held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in March this year.
Dilshan, the 17-year-old student of Ananda College, Colombo has won the badminton colors in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009, and in 2007 he achieved the `Ananda Padma' award, the highest award which an Anandian can achieve during the school time for any sport discipline. He also won the Western Province Badminton colours in 2008 and in 2009 All Island Badminton Colours.

Lankan shuttlers for Thomas and Uber Cup tourneys
(DN) Top shuttlers including Niluka Karunarathne, Dinuka Karunarathne, Thilini Jayasinghe will represent Sri Lanka in the all important Thomas and Uber Cups which would be worked off from February 22 to 28 in Bangkok, Thailand. Asia’s best shuttlers would be seen in action throughout the six days as they would vie for a place in the Thomas and Uber Cup.
Sri Lanka would be participating in the Preliminary Championship of the Asia Zone of which only four teams would be selected for the Thomas and Uber Cup World Championships. Read more ...
