(dn) At the 8th Colours Nite conducted by Nationalized Services Carrom Association, Ajith Chandrasoma of Ceylon Petroleum Corporation and Inoka Atapattu of State Engineering Corporation obtained trophies and colours as the best players in the year 2010 while J N Abeywardena of Ceylon Transport Board and Yashika Rahubadda of Ceylon Electricity Board obtained trophies and colours as the best players in the year 2011.
The Colours Nite was held at the 'Ceynor' Hotel, Colombo 10 recently under the patronage of Mrs Ranjani Jayakody the Director General of Sports of the Department of Sports.
Herein, 136 players who have secured successes at carrom competitions conducted by Nationalized Services Carrom Association for the years of 2010 and 2011 obtained trophies and certificates and 19 players obtained colours.
(ognp) Sri Lanka captain Nishatha Fernando became the Men’s Carrom world Champion as he beat India’s Barathee Dasan in the singles final at the World Carrom Championship concluded at the Galadari hotel yesterday.
80 players from 16 countries participated in the Championship. It was the only medal for Sri Lanka on the final day as the first four positions in the Women’s singles event were won by Indians.
Cooray beat Srinivas by 2-1 while Paradeshi who claimed the Swiss League Title with 111 points, beat Fernando and Gaekwad emerged victorious over Sherifdeen comprehensively. India’s Prakash Gaikwad beat Mohammed Sherifdeen in two straight sets 25-6 and 25-5.
Thus India showed their supremacy, after they suffered a shock defeat by the Lankans in the last world carrom championship held in 2008 in France. With this win, the Indian slicers took major honours winning the men’s and women’s world team championships.
(nf) Captain of the Sri Lanka Carrom team Nishantha Fernando beat C. Bharathi Dhasan of India to win the sixth World Carrom Championship in the singles event a short while ago.

(so) Indian men slicers regained their lost title drubbing defending champions Sri Lanka 3-0 in the team championship finals at the Sixth World Carrom Championship held at Galadari Hotel, Colombo.
The current world number one, India’s Yogesh Pardeshi beat Sri Lanka’s top seed Nishantha Fernando in straight sets, 25-5 and 25-15. However, host nation’s Chamil Cooray drubbed the first attempt 18-23 against India’s K. Srinivas, who then easily sliced to win the other two sets by 25-2 and 25-8.

6th Carrom World Championship 2012 Sri Lanka: Award Ceremony
(dn) Defending champions Sri Lankan women slicers were sent crashing out by Indians in the final of the team championship when the Sixth World Carrom Championship continued yesterday at the Galadari Hotel, Colombo.
Sri Lankan women carromites, who won the team championship in the previous edition, held in France, lost in straight three sets to India’s I. Illabazhaki, Kavitha Somanchi and Rashmi Kuma
Meanwhile, at the time of going to press, the host country’s men slicers were playing in the semi-finals in the 16-nation tournament, defeating Germany in the quarter-final.
Top teams, Sri Lanka and India qualified for semi-finals along with Canada and Bangaldesh. The two winners will meet in the finals of the men’s team championship today.

(dn) Indians dominated opening day of the sixth World Carrom Championship by winning both men's and women's doubles titles as the championship concluded its doubles event at the Galadari hotel, Colombo yesterday.
Sri Lankan women's pair Yashika Rahubadda and Madhushika Kanchanamala performed well to qualify for the women's doubles final, but did not able to overcome strong Indian duo world no. one I. Illabazhaki and Rashmi Kumari in the final. Indian girls bagged the title in straight set final 25/5, 25/4.
The men's double final turned to be an all Indian affair where world no. one Yogesh Paradeshi and Pragash Gaikwad beat their fellow countrymen K. Srinivas and Bharathidasan 25/18, 25/17. Sri Lankan pair Nishantha Fernando and Chamil Cooray were unfortunate to miss the final as they went down to India's K. Srinivas and Bharathidasan after a hard fought three setter semi-final 25/22, 0/25, 15/25.
(dn) The sixth Carrom World Championship commenced at the Galadari hotel, Colombo yesterday with Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage participating as the opening ceremony chief guest. More than 120 slicers from 18 countries taking part in the championship and a strong eight-member local team comprising four men and four women will fight to secure their team championship title which they won in France, 2008.
All the big names in international carrom including reigning singles champions India's Yogesh Paradeshi and I. Ilavazhaki along with Sri Lankan star players, Nishantha Ferdando, Chamil Cooray and Joseph Roshita will compete for the supremacy. Even though Asians are famous for the sport, a tough contest will be expected from the Western and European players this year.
The opening ceremony was held in grand style with the participation of Iternational Carrom Federation (ICF)President Arif Naqvi, Asian Carrom Federation (ACF) President S. K. Sharma and officials from national federations of many nations along with the contestants.
(dn) Local slicers who will participate in the sixth Carrom World Championship from October 31 to November 4 in Colombo are busy practicing hard at the Carrom Federation office (CFSL) in Maharagama these days.
The five-day championship will be worked off at the Galadari hotel.
The local squad will comprise four men and four women players with a standby contender in each category. Reigning national champions Nishantha Fernando and Joseph Roshita will captain Sri Lanka men’s and women’s teams respectively.
Even though the majority participation is from Asian region nearly 20 countries including European nations, Germany, Poland, Italy and Switzerland are taking part in the sixth World Championship.
Sri Lanka is the current World Team Champions as they defeated strong India in the team event of the fifth World Championship held in France, 2008. This year too Indian players will come up with the strongest challenge against locals while Bangladesh, Pakistan, USA and UK will also not make it easy for Sri Lanka.
(icf-media) The Carrom Federation of Sri Lanka is pleased to extend an invitation to all Carrom Federations affiliated to ICF to depute carrom teams to participate in the 06th World Carrom Championship to be held from 31st October to 04th November 2012 in Sri Lanka.
Each Federation may depute 04 men players, 04 women players and 01 official from each country for participating in this Championship. We would provide free hospitality i.e. free boarding, lodging and local transport from 12 noon on 30th October to 12 noon on 5th November 2012.

(dn) The eight member Sri Lanka carrom team will leave the island on July 11 to participate in the 16th SAARC Carrom Championships which is scheduled to be held in Dhaka, Bangladesh from July 11 to 14.
There will be three men and three women slicers along with a stand by player in both gender included in the local team.
Under the aegis of the Asian Carrom Confederation, Bangladesh Carrom Federation host the tournament this year. SAARC countries will compete in men's/women's singles, men's/women's doubles, mixed doubles and men's women's team events.

(dn) The Nationalized Services Carom Association will conduct an open carom tournament from May 23 to 24 and June 12 to 14 at the Bank of Ceylon Sports Club premises, York Street, Colombo 01.
More than 180 caromites from 22 nationalized services institutions are expected to take part in this tournament. There will be four events categories namely men's singles, men's doubles, women's singles and women's doubles to compete in the five-day tournament.

(dn) Carrom Federation of Sri Lanka (CFSL) has announced the local contingent for the Indo-Sri Lanka Carrom Test Series which is to be worked off from April 16 to 20 in Sri Lanka. The tournament will include three test matches which are scheduled to be played at three different venues in Panadura, Maharagama and Colombo.
Sri Lanka will compete with eight-member team including four players in each men's and women's category.
The first match will be played on April 16 at the River View Hotel, Panadura and the second will be worked off at the CFSL head quarters, Maharagama on April 18. The final match will be held at the Colombo Hilton hotel on April 20. The matches will start at 3pm on all three days.

The Nationalized Services Novices Carrom Championship was held at the headquarters of Sri Lanka Carrom Federation. The Men’s Singles event was won by Nilantha Thusithakumara of SLLR and DC with N.D.P.C. Wijegunawardene of Lake House emerging runner-up.
R.K. Yashika Rahubadda of Ceylon Electricity Board won both the singles and doubles titles in the women’s event. In doubles Yashika was partnered by R.M.R. Rathnayake of Ceylon Electricity Board. Women’s singles runner up was Pushpakanthi Abeyratne (SLSI).
(DN) “We are the carrom World Champions and we will try our utmost to beat the strong Indian team in the 14th SAARC Carrom Championship” said Wijeya Amarasinghe, Chairman, Sri Lanka Carrom Federation at a press conference held at Galadari Hotel recently.
He further added “Sri Lanka as you know is a founder member of both the International Carrom Federation (ICF) as well as the Asian Carrom Confederation (ACC). We have participated in many International Championships held locally and abroad and we were able to clinch the 5th World Championship in France in 2008 which coincided with the 50th Birth Anniversary of the Carrom Federation of Sri Lanka.

(DN) The Sri Lanka National Carrom team will participate in the Indo-Lanka Test Series organized by the All India Carrom Federation from May 1 to 7 in Guntur and Hyderabad.
A 12-member squad of Sri Lanka Slicers and officials leave for the Series on Friday.
