(dn) Kandy Municipal Council Sports Club won the overall championship at the all island State Services Table Tennis championship for 2012 held at the Cinecinati Indoor Stadium, Nuwara Eliya.
Over thirty teams participated in this major championship which saw some excellent performances.

(dn) Sixteen Table Tennis Tables (Stag Brand) were donated to the Schools in Sabaragamuwa Province by Sabaragamuwa Province Chief Minister Maheepala Herath.
On behalf of the Chief Minister, the tables were hand over by his son, Member of the Parliament in Kegalle District and Vice President cum Chairman of the Tournament Committee of Table Tennis Association of Sri Lanka and President of the Kegalle District Table Tennis Association Kanaka Herath at the recently concluded Kegalle District Ranking Table Tennis Championships.
In an earlier occasion too he donated 22 TT Tables to Sabaragamuwa Schools. Though TT was initiated in Sabaragamuwa Province by Chandana Perera in 1995 when he was the President of TT Association of Sri Lanka, together with Jothipala Samaraweera (then National Coach, Mrs. Priyani and Mrs. Anoma Dissanayake (two sisters), TT gained popularity in Sabaragamuwa Province during last two years due to the support given by the Chief Minister and his son, Kanaka Herath.
(dn) Buddhi Hemien Siriwardana of Kotelawala Defence University who is an old boy of Dharmasoka College and Hasini Sandeepani of Dharmasoka College Ambalangoda won Most Outstanding Players awards at the All Island Tibhar Novices Table Tennis Championships held last weekend at S.Thomas Indoor Stadium,Mt Lavinia.
Both players from Ambalangoda won Intermediate men's and women's titles and Buddhi Hemien also emerged champion in men's Novices event as well.
(dn) In an all Sri Lankan final, Chathura Gunasekara of Sussex College Kandy beat Lithmina Mahanama of Wesley College Colombo (11/02, 11/08 13/11) in the under-12 Consolation Draw final of the Thailand Junior and ITTF Global Junior Circuit Table Tennis Championships – 2012, worked off in Pattaya, yesterday.
Chathura entered the final beating Australian Zenaidee Zaki (11/ 06, 09/11, 11/08, 11/08) in the semi final match while Lithmina received a walkover from his Thailand opponent in the other semi-final.
Meanwhile in the Main Draw, three Sri Lankan under-12 girls entered the quarter-finals, but could not proceed to the semis as they had lost all three quarter-finals.
Local team will arrive in the country tomorrow.
(dn) The Sri Lankan under-15 'B' team paddlers who are participating in the Thailand Junior and Cadet Open - ITTF Premium Junior Circuit in Pattaya have qualified for the Consolation Draw final by beating Australia in the semi final played during the weekend (3/2).
They will battle against Malaysia in the Consolation final, who beat Sri Lankan 'A' team in the Consolation Draw second semi final (3/0).
(dn) Sri Lanka Junior National Table Tennis Team will participate in the Thailand Junior and Cadet Open International Table Tennis Championship and ITTF World Junior Circuit Table Tennis Championship from today till May 09 in Pattaya, Thailand.
The 18 member team included majority from outstations and will compete in under 12,15 and 18 age categories.
Sri Lankan girls and boys teams included some of the finest paddlers who participated in many international events and expected to come up with impressive performances in both tournaments.
(dn) Sri Lanka's national table tennis team will participate at the 51st World Table Tennis Championship which will be held at the Berman in Germany from March 21st onwards.
A total of 133 countries will participate at this prestigious International table tennis championship conducted by the International Table Tennis Federation. The last time this championship was held at this venue way back in 1989 and Sri Lanka's present National Table Tennis Coach Jagath Rajapakse was one of the representatives for Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka will field a 3-member women's team for this championship with Sri Lanka Air Force paddler 21-year Ishara Madurangi as its skipper.
The Sri Lanka men's national team will be led by Rohan Sirisena of Sri Lanka Air Force. Rohan Sirisena is presently ranked number one and is the current national champion which he won for the third time last month at Peradeniya.
(so) Sri Lanka will participate in the men’s and women’s 20th Asian Table Tennis Championship that will be held in Macau, Hongkong from February 23 to March 1.The team will be accompanied by Jagath Rajapakse as coach and Saman Ratnayake as the Chef-de-Mission.
(dn) Three leading Sri Lakan veteran table tennis players, Dr. Nimal Lucas, Mohammed Laffeer and Mrs Ira Ruwanpathirana will participate in the 13th Australian Masters Games to be held in Adelaide. The tournament started yesterday and will conclude on October 16.
They will participate in the Singles, Doubles, Mixed Doubles and team events. They are hopeful of winning several medals at the Masters Games thus bringing honour to Sri Lanka.
(dn) The all-island under 15 ranking Table Tennis Championship organized by the Sri Lanka Table Tennis Association will be worked off at the Jagath Rajapakse International Table Tennis Stadium at Meegoda in Kalugamuwa off Peradeniya on August 24 and 25.
The events which will be worked off will be girls and boys under 10, under 12 and under 15 singles.
Jagath Rajapakse International Table Tennis Stadium is located about 15 kilometres off Kandy in the village of Kalugamuwa.National Table Tennis coach Jagath Rajapakse is also available to coach and train the paddlers.
(dn) Table Tennis in the hill capital will receive a tremendous boost when the South Asian Table Tennis Championship (SATTC) organized by the Table Tennis Association of Sri Lanka is worked off at the Jagath Rajapaksa International Indoor Table Tennis Association Indoor Stadium at Ganegoda off Peradeniya from June 20 to 23.
The President of the Kandy District Table Tennis Association Manzil Muthalib said that the South Asian Table Tennis Union (SATTU) was formed and affiliated to the Asian Table Tennis Union (ATTU) as a regional Sport Association to promote, develop and conduct table tennis in the countries located in the South Asian region to provide exposure to table tennis players.
The Jagath Rajapaksa International Indoor Table Tennis Stadium is located at a village called Ganegoda in the Galaba - Nilambe range along Gampola Road about ten kilometres away from the Kandy-Colombo road. The Jagath Rajapaksa International Table Tennis Stadium has all the features to make it an international venue and is so large that 24 tables could be accommodated at any given time with all other facilities for the public.
Table tennis is one sport in which Sri Lanka could reach international standards provided the young paddlers are given the proper guidance with the necessary facilities which are so essential.
(dn) The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) has enrolled 20 Sri Lankan paddlers under its 'Hopes' program to train the future national TT players of the country. The program has focused the grass root level as it will cater for the under 12 age category. With the intention to improve their skills and progress to National and international level in the future,10 boys and 10 girls who have performed extremely well in last year's ranking tournaments were selected for the program.
Besides it has been decided to provide scholarships and opportunities for the participants to take part in International Coaching Camp and International Competitions. All 20 players will be entitled to participate in the ITTF Hopes International TT Championships in Vienna, Austrian which will be worked off in June. It will be a great opportunity for the young paddlers in Sri Lanka.
The selected 20 players have already started their practices at the Ambalangoda Fisheries Hall from April 18 under coach Chathura Dushan. The head coach of ITTF Hopes program Dejan Papic will be in Sri Lanka on April 24 to train our players from April 25 to 29 at S Thomas Indoor Stadium Mt Lavinia. Dejan is a 49 years old Yugoslav who has been residing in Canada for the last 14 years. He is an experienced and a leading coach in the world.
A local Hopes tournament will be conducted from April 30 to May 1 at the Horana Indoor Stadium.
(dn) Two table tennis teams from Germany-SKG Bonsweiher and TVA 877 Essen Kupferdreh which arrived in Sri Lanka on April 15 will play three matches each against Sri Lanka teams during their 18 day tour.
SKG Bonsweiher will comprise 20 men's and women's players while TVA 877 Essen Kupferdreh will consist of eight men's and women's players and will play men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles matches against their Sri Lankan counterparts in the three matches which will be played on April 21, 23 and 30 at the Indoor Stadium, Marawila.
The tour has been arranged by the Asian German Sports Exchange programme to give the Sri Lankan paddlers the much needed exposure against foreign teams. The two German table tennis teams will also go on a sightseeing tour of Negombo, Pinnawala, Kandy and Colombo during their visit to Sri Lanka according to the chief tour co-ordinator Kai Globig. The Sri Lanka national table tennis team will also tour Germany in either May or June 2012.
(so) Table Tennis: To win nine medals (seven golds and two bronze) at one tournament calls for sheer dedication to that particular sport. In Sri Lanka there is one such dedicated person and he happens to be a doctor - Dr. Gerard Nimal Lucas whose life outside the stethoscope and possible medicinal cures has been to widen his knowledge and establish himself as a table tennis player of repute. He won all the medals at the New Zealand Masters Games T.T. in Wanganui 9 in February.
The mere mention of the name Dr. Nimal Lucas will bring many stories related to the game of table tennis and this has been made possible due to his perseverance in taking the game forward. Though he is now catching up on his age, he is still keen on the game and ever willing to teach the up-and-coming youngsters the finer points of the game.
That Dr. Lucas captained Sri Lanka in table tennis is known to all and sundry and in the good old days when he was young (1966-71) and having learnt the rudiments at an early age, brought out the best in him.
Take the New Zealand Masters Games, Dr. Lucas participated in the over 55 years (55 to 64 years), over 65 (65 to 69 years), and over 70 (70 and over) categories.
As a veteran table tennis player Dr. Lucas has a very encouraging international record. In July 2005, Dr. Lucas partnered by Mohamed Lafeer won the over 55 age group men's doubles silver medal at the World Masters Games Table Tennis Championships held in Edmonton, Canada. He won a bronze medal in the men's singles over 50 category at the South African Masters Games Championships held in Nelson Mandela Bay in April 2006. Then in 2007 in the New Zealand Masters Games TT in Wanganui, he won a gold medal in the over 55 team event (partnered by S. S. de Silva and M.M.M. Lafeer), a silver in the over 65 men's doubles (partnered by R. A. Wimalasena) and 4 bronze medals (over 65 years men's doubles, over 65 years mixed doubles, over 35 years men's singles and over 65 men's mixed doubles).
In 2009 in February, he won gold in the over 55 men's singles, over 65 men's singles and over 65 men's doubles event and bronze medal in the over 35 years team event.
May 2010, he was a semifinalist in men's singles (65 to 69 age group) and in the Open Handicap Singles at Stockholm, Sweden 2010 Veteran Open TT he won cash awards instead of medals. Then in September 2010 partnered by Mohamed Lafeer, Dr. Lucas won the 60-64 age group men's doubles bronze medal at the 16th International Veteran TT Yourney held in Antalya, Turkey.
(dn) Sri Lanka will take part in the Asian Veterans Table Tennis Championships in Thailand on April 30, 2011. The Lankan team will consist of four players.
Thailand will also send a strong table tennis contingent along with Malaysia and Singapore for the International Masters Games which will be held in Sri Lanka in November this year.
The officials of the Thailand Table Tennis Association also promised to extend their maximum support to the Masters Games in Sri Lanka during discussions they had with veteran TT player and CEO of AGSEP Dietmar Doering during his visit to Thailand early this month.
(dn) For the first time in the history of Table Tennis in Sri Lanka an European Table Tennis Cadet Team comprising four boys, four girls, two coaches came to Sri Lanka recently. The purpose of this visit is for them to get adapted to the climate and weather conditions in this region prior to participating in the ITTF Global Cadet Challenge which will be held in Hydrabad, India from October 30 to November 7, 2010.
In order to achieve this they are going to practice with our players who took part in the recent Youth Olympic Games in Singapore and Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India at the St. Thomas College (STC) Indoor Sports Complex Mt.Lavinia.
(dn) The Sri Lanka Junior Table Tennis team left for Teheran to participate in the Fuj International Table Tennis championships to be held from October 27 to 29 in Teheran/Iran.
More than 15 countries in Asia and Europe along with Sri Lanka team will take part in this tournament which will be conducted on a round robin basis with the teams grouped according to rankings.
This team is led by Kulanake Hendahewa of Royal College also includes Udaya Ranasinghe of Vidyartha and Supun Sirisena of Maliyadeva Kurunegala. These three juniors are the best outfit for the future Sri Lanka table tennis. These three have played for the recently concluded Asian Junior TT C'ships held in Thailand.
Sri Lankas most experienced coach Jagath Rajapakse will be the coach and Manzil Muthalib will be the Manager. A point of interest is both the Manager and Coach have played together during their playing days for national sides and have represented Sri Lanka at the Junior TT C'ships in Japan 1987.
(DN) Two table tennis coaches from Germany Alla Gorbenko and Oxana Gorbenko who are in Sri Lanka for two months will be training Lankan table tennis players during their stay here.
Alla and Oxana have played for Essen in the German third division and taken part in several national tournaments in Germany having played the game from the age of nine. The duo who are students of the University of Essen will also conduct a workshop in Sri Lanka for Sri Lankan paddlers and members of the Maldivian national team who will be touring Sri Lanka early next month.
